The Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as the first true American muscle car. Introduced in 1964 as a performance package for the Pontiac Tempest, it featured a powerful V8 engine that emphasized speed and affordability. The GTO quickly gained popularity, helping to define the muscle car era of the 1960s. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, it evolved with more aggressive styling and higher horsepower, including the iconic Ram Air engines. Declining performance regulations and fuel concerns led to its discontinuation in 1974. Pontiac revived the GTO name briefly from 2004 to 2006 as a modern performance coupe.
